SRINAGAR: The Government has announced a significant expansion of citizen services with the introduction of Passport Verification Records (PVR) on the DigiLocker platform. The National e-Governance Division under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, working in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, has enabled citizens to securely access, store, and digitally share their verification records through DigiLocker, the cloud-based digital document repository under the Digital India programme.
The move is being described by the Government as a major boost to paperless, secure, and citizen-centric service delivery. Officials said the integration reduces dependence on physical records and expands the convenience and reach of official verification documents for millions of passport applicants and holders.
Citizens who complete their verification process will now find their Passport Verification Record available in the “Issued Documents” section of their DigiLocker account. The Government said this will make official documents more easily accessible while maintaining the high levels of security and authenticity associated with digitally issued records.
According to the Government, the new feature offers several direct advantages. Citizens will be able to access their PVR anytime through the DigiLocker app or web portal, eliminating the need to store physical copies. The digitisation of verification documents is also expected to quicken procedures in areas such as travel, employment, and compliance by reducing paperwork and enabling instant verification. Each PVR is issued directly by the relevant government system, making it tamper-proof and secure. Citizens can also share their verification record digitally with authorised requesters, ensuring quick, consent-based access without repeated photocopies or physical submissions.
The Government said the initiative furthers its commitment to green, paperless governance by shifting passport-related verification workflows into a fully digital system. Officials described the integration as a milestone in strengthening India’s digital public infrastructure, enhancing transparency, and deepening the use of trusted digital documents across public and private sectors.
The collaboration between the Ministry of External Affairs and the National e-Governance Division underlines the whole-of-government approach being adopted to improve service delivery. The Government said the addition of PVR to DigiLocker is expected to benefit millions by streamlining verification processes, shortening turnaround times, and expanding the ease and security of accessing essential documents.
