Clashes erupted at many places between protesters and forces after Friday prayers against the killing of Gowhar Nazir who was shot dead allegedly by 44 Battalion of Para-military Central Reserve Police Force on November 7.
Chairperson Hurriyat Conference (g) Syed Ali Geelani had called for peaceful protest demonstration after the Friday prayers everywhere in the state on 13 November against the killing of Gowhar Nazir.
Peaceful protests were organized in many parts including Bandipora where funeral prayers-in-absentia were offered in favour of the deceased youth. However, in certain parts of old Srinagar city and Zainakote area protests turn violent while police used tear-smoke shells to disperse protesting youth who amid pro-freedom slogans attacked forces with stones.
Eyewitnesses told CNS that immediately after Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid Srinagar, a large number of youth took to the streets and held protest demonstration shouting slogans. When the protesters reached at the main gate of the Jamia Masjid, close to Nowhatta Chowk, policemen who were deployed there didn’t allow them to proceed ahead. The protesters resorted to stone-pelting as a result traffic and other business activities were affected in the area. Stone-pelting incidents were also reported from Saraf Kadal and Gojwara area of the city.
Reports said that many people were injured in Zainakote during the hours long clashes that broke out between the protesters and forces.
Protests were also held at Hyderpora in uptown Srinagar after congregational Friday prayers were over.
