IIT Jammu, established in 2015 and operating from its fully functional permanent campus since February 2024, currently hosts 1,546 students supported by more than 230 teaching and non-teaching staff. The institute was earlier allocated Rs 1,182.56 crore under Phase A of the national expansion plan for new IITs. In May 2025, the Union Cabinet approved Phase B construction for five third-generation IITs, including IIT Jammu, with a total outlay of Rs 11,828.79 crore. Of this, Rs 2,468.44 crore has been earmarked for IIT Jammu to strengthen academic capacity and establish a dedicated Research Park.

The Research Park, the Ministry said, is expected to drive collaboration with leading industries, promote entrepreneurship and student incubation, enhance academic–industry linkages, and widen the outreach of academic research for industrial application.

IIM Jammu, set up in 2016, has also expanded rapidly. Its academic offerings have grown from 13 to 20 courses, with 1,191 students enrolled across programmes. New infrastructure includes sports facilities, an Open Air Theatre, and an additional hostel accommodating 688 students. The institute has also anchored the Mission Yuva Udyami Vikas Abhiyan, a Jammu and Kashmir Government initiative aimed at creating employment opportunities for 4.25 lakh youth over the next five years.

A Centre for Innovation and Transformation in Governance (CITaG) has been created at IIM Jammu to support socio-economic development initiatives across the Union Territory.

The two premier institutions have already entered into a collaborative framework. An MoU signed in 2021 enables joint work in teaching, research, consultancy, administration, and placements, including shared faculty and academic resources. They have also introduced joint academic programmes, including a dual-degree B.Tech–MBA pathway (IIT Jammu + IIM Jammu) and a PG MBA (Hospital Administration & Healthcare Management) programme in partnership with AIIMS Jammu.

The Government said these initiatives are intended to deepen institutional linkages with local industry, improve placement outcomes, and ensure that Jammu and Kashmir’s emerging higher education hubs integrate more closely with the region’s economic development goals.
