Invasive Weed Spotted in Srinagar, SKUAST-K Warns Of Spread

   

SRINAGAR: Scientists from Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) have detected the invasive weed Parthenium hysterophorus L. in an agricultural field in Srinagar, prompting the university to advise farmers and agricultural stakeholders to remain vigilant against its spread.

The university has called for early detection and sustained field-level surveillance to prevent the weed from establishing a foothold in Kashmir’s agricultural ecosystems.

The sighting serves as an early warning rather than a cause for panic, SKUAST-K scientists said, stressing the need for monitoring agricultural fields and disturbed habitats across the Valley.

The weed, commonly known as parthenium, belongs to the Asteraceae family and is recognised for its rapid growth, prolific seed production and ability to suppress surrounding vegetation. Its spread can affect crop productivity, native flora and biodiversity.

Prof Purshotam Singh and Prof Amal Sexana, both agronomists, along with Prof Raihana Habib Kanth, Director Extension, SKUAST-K, said the recent detection assumes significance in view of research showing that the species can complete its entire life cycle in Kashmir’s temperate climate.

According to the research, parthenium seeds can survive winter in the soil, germinate between late March and early May, and mature into flowering plants capable of producing viable seeds before the onset of severe autumn frosts.

The scientists warned that seasonal warming could create more favourable conditions for the weed’s proliferation. They said it can spread through contaminated soil, agricultural machinery, moving water, vehicles and contaminated seed or feed supplies.

Although parthenium has been documented earlier in Jammu and Kashmir, the latest finding provides fresh evidence of its adaptation and reproductive success under local temperate conditions, the university said.

SKUAST-K has advocated an integrated weed-management strategy to contain the threat. The measures include coordinated surveillance, early identification, mechanical removal, targeted eradication and long-term monitoring.

The university stressed that timely action would be crucial to preventing the weed from spreading across Kashmir’s farmlands.
