SRINAGAR: Monika Dhami on Monday assumed charge as the Principal Commissioner of Income Tax in Srinagar, becoming the highest-ranking Income Tax Department officer in the region covering the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

A 2001-batch Indian Revenue Service officer, Dhami has held several key assignments in the Income Tax Department and the Government of India, including policy-making roles in the Department of Economic Affairs and senior assessment responsibilities related to corporate and salary taxation.
She has also served as lead trainer of newly inducted civil servants at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, the apex training institution for civil services, and as Additional Director General (Training) at the Directorate of Training in New Delhi.
According to an official statement, Dhami has been posted to Srinagar to work closely with taxpayers, tax professionals, trade bodies and industry stakeholders to further strengthen a fair, transparent and taxpayer-friendly tax administration across the two Union Territories.
She was formally welcomed by officers and officials of the department in Srinagar, where, during her first interaction, she highlighted recent transformations in the department, including greater use of technology, faceless processes and simplified compliance mechanisms.
Dhami reiterated that voluntary compliance remains the cornerstone of the tax system and urged officers to work towards strengthening trust and cooperation between taxpayers and the department.
She said special emphasis would be laid on grievance redressal, taxpayer outreach programmes, awareness initiatives and stakeholder consultations to ensure public concerns are addressed promptly and effectively.
An alumna of the London School of Economics and Political Science, Dhami holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy. She also underscored the importance of staff skill development to enhance professional efficiency in the evolving public service environment.
