Jammu Kashmir Cabinet Sub-Committee Reviews Reservation Policy Amid Rising Grievances

SRINAGAR: Amid growing discontent over the allocation of government jobs under revised reservation rules, the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Reservation Policy convened a crucial meeting today. The committee, chaired by Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakeena Itoo, focused on addressing grievances raised by aspirants and stakeholders across Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting was attended by Javed Ahmad Rana, Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology and Environment, and Tribal Affairs; Commissioner Secretary of the Social Welfare Department, Sanjeev Verma; Secretary Law, Achal Sethi; and representatives from the General Administration Department.

The discussions centred on various aspects of the reservation policy, particularly its impact on job distribution in the region. Since the changes introduced after 2019, a significant portion of government positions has been allocated to reserved categories, prompting concerns among sections of the population. The Sub-Committee examined these grievances and deliberated on potential amendments to the policy to ensure a more balanced and equitable approach.

The government had constituted the Sub-Committee last month in response to widespread appeals from aspirants, particularly those who feel disadvantaged under the current system. The committee has been tasked with reviewing the policy and recommending changes, if necessary, to address these concerns.

In addition to the Sub-Committee’s efforts, the matter is also under consideration in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, where a legal challenge to the revised reservation rules is pending.

The Sub-Committee will submit its findings and recommendations to the Council of Ministers, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The recommendations are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the reservation framework in Jammu and Kashmir.
