SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have cautioned the public against falling victim to online task scams, warning that fraudsters often use small initial payments to gain the confidence of unsuspecting victims before cheating them out of larger sums.
In a cyber safety advisory issued through its official social media handle, the police warned that “the first payment isn’t your profit. It’s the beginning of the scam.”
According to the advisory, fraudsters typically lure people by offering money for simple online activities such as liking products, rating websites or completing basic digital tasks. To build trust, they may initially allow victims to withdraw a small amount before persuading them to invest or deposit larger sums, which are ultimately lost.
The police urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with unknown individuals or online platforms promising quick and easy earnings through task-based schemes.
People have also been advised to verify the authenticity of such offers before making any financial transactions and to report suspicious activities to the concerned authorities without delay.
The advisory is part of the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s ongoing cyber awareness campaign aimed at educating the public about emerging online financial frauds and preventing cyber-enabled scams.
