A Kashmiri student designer, currently studying at the International Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD), Hyderabad was one of the ten students who participated in the London Fashion Week (LFW). She presented her capsule collection each at a show organised by Fashion Scout as a part of LFW’s Spring Summer 2017 edition.
Saba Shabnam Khan is 22 years old and was one of the 10 students who were selected from nearly 40,000 fashion students across India. She was the only student from the INFID Hyderabad.
Inclined towards designing and sketching from childhood, Saba has told reporters that she took a bit of time in making her family understand that designing and modeling are two different activities. Finally, they respected her decision and finally invited her to Hyderabad where they admitted her to the INFID.
Interestingly when she was figured in the first eight students for the London jaunt, she was trapped in Kashmir which was witnessing massive uprising over Burhan Wani’s killing.
Saba told reporters that she started working and it was terribly difficult to manage what she wanted to showcase. The markets were closed and life paralyzed and accessing normal things was difficult.
“I felt as if I was into a black and white world with no telephone, no internet and no transport,” Saba told Preeti Singh of Sunday Guardian. “I remember, one day, I was travelling to a place for getting my embroidery done for the garments, when I was attacked by the protesters. It was a very unpredictable situation plus my parents were in Hyderabad and they were concerned about me.”
Ms Khan has Kashmir dominating her designing. Her creations named Amazing Kashmir, showcased Kashmir’s tradition and beauty. It included Kashida embroidery and variety of fabrics including cashmere, light denim, feather-weight leather; shear fabrics, semi-transparent voiles and flowing crepes, and printed silks. Her presentations used hook work, aari work, kani work, needle work in pure pashmina, shifon, and handmade cotton, she told Ms Singh.
Interestingly, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Union Minister of State Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, has made her the brand ambassador of India for one of his projects.
