SRINAGAR: Prof Ghulam Mohuddin Bhat, a towering engineering teacher at the University of Kashmir, is no more. He died at around 2:45 am during the night, his close friend Dr Fayz confirmed.

Prof G M Bhat, top engineering teacher and innovator died of Covid19 on May 16, 2021.

Dr Bhat has headed the University’s Department of Electronics Engineering, Institute of Technology and the Institute of Technology. He was fighting Covid19.

“Prof Bhat, an innovation evangelist, helped create many meaningful platforms for local innovators in Kashmir at KU. He was instrumental in establishing the National Innovation Foundation’s innovation cell at KU in 2006 and helped create DSIR, Ministry of Science and Technology, a TePP Outreach-cum- Innovation Centre at KU,” Dr Fayaz, who is an innovations scholar-teacher in a Chinese university, wrote. “Besides playing a key role in setting up the Institute of Technology, Zakura Campus and the Institute of Engineering and Technology, Safapora, Prof Bhat was awarded two patents for his electro-mechanical cassette player and novel techniques for plus code modulation in 2003. His famous innovation is Mikshafut Tareeq, a path detection device for people with visual impairments. He is the first from Kashmir and from Kashmir University to have received two patents.”

Dr Fayaz has worked with Prof Bhat between 2006 and 2010 and helped him scout and identify local innovations from Jammu and Kashmir. “Prof Bhat, together with NIF, GIAN, helped scout more than 2000 local innovations and outstanding traditional knowledge practices from all districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Without a doubt, he was an inspiring professor and a brilliant innovator. As an institution builder, Prof Bhat created many centres and departments at KU. Further, as a champion of self-reliance and technological autonomy, he campaigned for local innovations and local technologies,” Dr Fayaz wrote further.

Dr Fayaz said last night at 10 pm when he spoke with Prof Bhat’s wife, Prof Tasleem, she was broken and completely dissatisfied with the Covid19 management at JLNM Hospital. Tasleem is a senior professor at the University of Kashmir’s education department.

Two school-aged daughters survive Prof Bhat. His brother-in-law passed from Covid19 a few weeks ago.

Dr Bilquis Shah, one of the senior executives of the JlNM Hospital said that the patient had lost 80 per cent of his lungs and was on a ventilator.

“After hectic efforts of five hours, we arranged a bed for him in SKIMS, “Dr Shah said. “But the patient’s attendants refused to go saying no ventilator bed is available at SKIMS. But we had arranged ICU bed for him and SKIMS was knowing that patient is already on a ventilator. Even CR is informed. Everything was ready. But sorry state of affairs from the attendant side.”
