Srinagar

A complete shutdown is being observed on Tuesday across Kashmir against the killing of a civilian and two militants in Drubgam village of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Shops and business establishments were closed and traffic is off the road in civil lines and uptown Srinagar though few private vehicles, besides cabs and three-wheelers, could be seen plying on some routes.

Curfew-like restrictions have been imposed in Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Rainawari, Khanyar, Safa Kadal, Maisuma and Kralkhud areas since early morning for precautionary measures.

The shutdown call has been given by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), a pro-freedom conglomerate of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik.

On Monday, top Hizbul commander Sameer Tiger and his associate Aquib were killed during a six-hour-long gunfight in the district’s Drubgam village.

Shahid Ahmad, 14, was killed in clashes and at least 20 other civilians were also injured.

Mobile internet services have been suspended across south Kashmir.
