SRINAGAR: In a significant step to enhance the low-tension (LT) network at the distribution periphery, Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) is set to install 7,000 new Distribution Transformer (DT) substations across Kashmir Valley under the Centre’s flagship Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
All 13 packages under the RDSS-LR (Loss Reduction) initiative have been awarded in Kashmir Division and are progressing at various stages of completion.
A KPDCL spokesperson said that the installation of new DT substations will greatly improve the quality and reliability of power supply across all 10 districts of Kashmir Division. “While 5 packages are being executed by KPDCL, 4 packages each in North and South Kashmir are being implemented by NTPC and PESL as Project Implementing Agencies (PIAs), at a total cost of Rs 2,316 crore,” he said, adding that a significant number of DT substations have already been installed and commissioned under the 5 RDSS packages in Srinagar, Budgam, and Baramulla districts.
KPDCL is overseeing RDSS projects in ED I, II, & III of Srinagar, Baramulla, and Budgam districts, while NTPC is handling ED IV for Srinagar, Ganderbal, and Bandipora districts. PESL is responsible for executing works in Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, and Anantnag districts. “These projects will increase the network’s carrying capacity and meet consumer demand for new DT installations, particularly in rural districts of Kashmir Valley,” he added.
The spokesperson further noted that with the upcoming smart metering initiatives and the installation of new steel tubular poles and LT-AB cable, KPDCL aims to enhance reliable power supply, improve billing efficiency, and reduce Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses. “Feeder metering at 11 kV has already commenced, with 1,485 feeders being monitored. Additionally, approximately 6.85 lakh consumer smart meters and 40,670 DT meters will be installed under RDSS,” he explained.
KPDCL also plans to lay 15,000 km of LT-AB (Aerial Bunched) cable and erect 1.5 lakh new steel tubular poles to reinforce the LT network at the distribution level. “With LT-AB cable installation, KPDCL aims to significantly reduce AT&C losses over the next two years, ultimately enabling uninterrupted power supply to consumers,” he assured.
Urging consumers to cooperate, the spokesperson emphasised that approved shutdowns, particularly on 11 kV feeders, are essential for executing RDSS-LR works. “KPDCL will notify shutdowns in advance through print and electronic media to inform consumers. This is crucial to ensure the safety of workers on-site,” he added. (GNS)
