In first case of its kind at district level, doctors at Maternity & Child Hospital (MC) Islamabad carried out blood transfusion to a new born baby, which otherwise is done at tertiary care hospitals of valley only.
According to hospital sources, a woman namely Jameela wife of Abdul Rasheed of Anichdoora Islamabad underwent a caesarian surgery at the hospital on November 22, giving birth to a baby who was suffering from severe jaundice. Incidentally the mother’s blood group was O +ve while as the child’s blood group was found to be O –ve, giving rise to further complications, the sources added.
Subsequently, the doctors at the hospital admitted the baby at the Facility Based New Born Care Unit for treatment. “It was a complicated case as the Serum Bilirubin value of the baby was 18.8 and the Rh incompatibility had made it even more complicated for us. We normally refer such patients to tertiary care hospitals but team of our doctors decided to handle the case at the hospital itself”, said Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Abdul Majeed Mehraab.
After the medical consultation, blood transfer of baby was done in the hospital. The baby has been admitted at the FBNC unit and is doing quite well, he added.
The Medical Superintendent hailed the team of doctors and paramedics and hoped that such cases would be handled at the hospital on regular basis in the future as well.
