SRINAGAR: Fire and Emergency Services Kashmir Division responded to multiple fire incidents across the Valley over the past 24 hours, while Srinagar and Budgam districts reported no fire calls, officials said on Saturday.
The incidents were recorded between 10 am on December 27 and 10 am on December 28. Officials attributed the absence of fires in Srinagar and Budgam to improved preparedness, increased public awareness and effective fire prevention measures.
In other districts, a fire involving a haystack used as cattle fodder was reported at Yashpora in Anantnag. In north Kashmir, a blaze broke out in a double-storied Tehsil Office building in the Tangmarg area of Sopore, but prompt action by fire personnel prevented the fire from spreading and limited the damage.
In Bandipora district, a fire involving an electricity transformer erupted in Mir Mohalla of the Hajin area. Firefighters managed to bring the situation under control in time, averting a major threat to the surrounding locality. Meanwhile, in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, a fire in Rajpora damaged poplar trees and nearly 2,000 bundles of hay grass. Another fire incident in Gulshan Abad, Rajpora, caused damage to two wooden sheds before being contained.
Officials said Fire and Emergency Services personnel showed professionalism and courage while tackling the incidents, working under challenging conditions and, in some cases, risking their lives to protect property and prevent further losses.
The department has again urged people to remain alert and promptly report any fire-related emergencies to ensure quick response and safeguard life and property.
According to official data, Jammu and Kashmir received 6,752 fire calls in 2024, including 42 false alarms. During the year, 2,938 buildings were affected by fires, while property worth approximately Rs 1,699 crore was saved. Most fire incidents were attributed to LPG leakages, electrical overloads, short circuits and the increased use of heating appliances.
Data for fire incidents in 2025 has not yet been released by the department, officials added.
