SRINAGAR: Water supply from a filtration plant in the Dawaran area of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district was suspended after a dead dog was allegedly found inside the facility, officials and local residents said on Monday.
Locals said that the carcass was discovered within the filtration plant, raising concerns over the safety and quality of drinking water supplied to the area. Residents also alleged that the plant lacked proper covering and adequate maintenance, allowing access to animals.
They further claimed that a similar incident had occurred in April last year when another dead dog was reportedly found inside the same filtration plant, adding that the facility had remained uncovered despite earlier complaints.
Officials from the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department said water supply from the plant was immediately stopped after the incident came to light and a sanitation drive was initiated at the site.
An Executive Engineer of the PHE Sub-Division Uri said directions had been issued for thorough cleaning and sanitisation of the plant. He added that a proposal had been submitted under the UT Capex Budget to cover uncovered filtration plants in Uri, particularly those vulnerable to animal intrusion.
Meanwhile, residents have urged the administration to deploy a medical team to the area as a precautionary measure and to conduct health checks for consumers dependent on the supply. (GNS)
