SRINAGAR: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has established a permanent National Security Guard (NSG) hub in Jammu City to counter potential terror attacks swiftly and effectively, Jammu newspaper Daily Excelsior reported. This development is part of an enhanced security plan for high-rise buildings, sensitive installations, and public places within the city and its outskirts, following a comprehensive security audit.
Officials told the newspaper that the NSG’s deployment in Jammu City aims to ensure immediate action against any terrorist threat. Previously, NSG commandos had to be airlifted from New Delhi or Chandigarh, resulting in time delays during emergencies. With the new hub in place, these elite forces will be readily available to respond to any situation. While the exact strength of the NSG contingent has not been disclosed for operational reasons, officials assured that it is sufficient to handle any type of terror threat in the region.
The decision to station NSG commandos in Jammu follows a spate of terror attacks in the region, targeting security forces and raising concerns over possible threats to Jammu City.
The deployment is part of a detailed anti-terror strategy formulated by the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP), focusing on high-rise buildings, security installations, and public spaces of a sensitive nature. Security audits, led primarily by the Special Operations Group (SOG) teams, have been conducted for locations such as shopping malls, cinemas, government offices, and other potential targets to ensure readiness against any eventuality.
“Although terrorists are not currently in a position to breach the multi-layered security walls protecting the city, the plan has been implemented to prepare for any situation,” officials said.
The Special Operations Group and affiliated wings of the JKP are expected to lead the frontline response, with assistance from the NSG if required. The NSG’s involvement will be particularly crucial in prolonged encounters or high-risk scenarios, the newspaper added.
