Gayoor Hassan

(1939-2013)

Noted Kashmiri artist, sculptor and former Principal of Fine Arts College Kashmir, Gayoor Hassan breathed his last this past week at SKIMS Srinagar. He was battling health issues from last two years.

Born in Dalgate Srinagar in 1939, Gayoor did B.A. (Fine Arts) Sculpture from M.S. University of Baroda in 1970. Later he taught at the Institute of Music & Fine Arts, Srinagar before he was elevated as its principal.

He also served as Dean Faculty of Music & Fine Arts, University of Kashmir from 1990-98.

Gayoor pioneered Kashmir Artist’s Guild in 1971 and contemporary sculpture movement in Kashmir. His works were displayed at Lalit Kala Galleries, Shridharani Art Gallery, Triveni Kala Sangam, Ashoka Art Gallery, New Delhi, Jehangir Art gallery and Taj Art Gallery, Mumbai.

He also participated in various State, National & International Art Exhibitions since 1962.

Gayoor received numerous awards from J&K Cultural Academy & from other state academies including senior Fellowship Deptt. of Culture HRD Govt. of India and was honoured “ Veteran Artist of India” by AIFACS, New Delhi in 2003.

During his eventful career he was also awarded Sadiq Memorial Award and Citation for Life Time Achievement in Fine Arts and he also won first prize in All India Creative Calligraphy competition.
