SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir is likely to witness scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, with the Meteorological Centre Srinagar cautioning about isolated incidents of lightning, gusty winds and weather-related hazards at vulnerable places.
According to the weather bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre, Srinagar, at 11 am on Saturday, maximum temperatures during the past 24 hours remained 0-3 degrees Celsius above normal at many places in Kashmir division, while they remained 0-1 degrees Celsius near normal across many parts of Jammu division.
Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 32.2°C, the highest in Kashmir division, while Kathua recorded 33.6°C, the highest in Jammu division. Gulmarg recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Kashmir at 9.2°C, while Bhaderwah recorded 16.4°C in Jammu division.
The department said light to moderate rain, with isolated heavy rain and thunderstorms, was recorded during the past 24 hours. Jammu received the highest rainfall at 68.5 mm.
For the next 24 hours, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected across J&K. The precipitation is likely to show a decreasing trend during the subsequent two days.
The forecast for Kashmir indicates fairly widespread rainfall on August 23, followed by isolated rainfall from August 24 to August 29. Jammu is expected to experience fairly widespread rain on August 23 and scattered rainfall thereafter.
The weather department has warned of isolated thunder, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph in Kashmir on August 23. It has also flagged the possibility of landslides, mudslides, shooting stones and flash floods at vulnerable places. Similar weather-related risks have been indicated for Jammu division.
For August 24, Srinagar is expected to remain partly cloudy, with the possibility of very light rain or thunderstorms. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 31°C and 19°C, respectively. Jammu is likely to record around 35°C and 26°C, with light rain or thunderstorms.
The Meteorological Centre has advised people to remain alert, particularly in vulnerable areas, in view of the possibility of sudden weather activity and associated risks.
