Red Fort Blast: Govt Advisory Bars Telecast of Material ‘Inciting Violence’

SRINAGAR: The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Tuesday issued an advisory directing all private satellite television channels to refrain from broadcasting content that could justify acts of violence or demonstrate methods of making explosive devices, warning that such coverage risks inciting unrest and endangering national security.

In the advisory, the Ministry said it had taken note of certain news channels telecasting material related to alleged persons involved in the Red Fort blast, including content that could be construed as rationalising violent acts. It also flagged the circulation of information and videos depicting ways to prepare explosive material.

The Ministry cautioned that such broadcasts may “inadvertently encourage or incite violence, disrupt public order, and pose risks to national security.”

Citing the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, the Ministry reminded broadcasters to adhere strictly to the Programme and Advertising Code. It said any violation of Rules 6(1)(d), 6(1)(e), and 6(1)(h) — which prohibit obscene, defamatory or false content, material likely to incite violence or anti-national attitudes, and content affecting the integrity of the nation — would invite regulatory action.

All channels have been asked to exercise “the highest level of discretion and sensitivity” while reporting on sensitive incidents and to avoid visuals that could aid, abet or promote unlawful activities.
