SRINAGAR: Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine have killed at least 13 people and injured many others, in what officials described as one of Moscow’s largest aerial assaults in recent months, according to the BBC.
The attacks hit several cities, including Dnipro and Kyiv, amid an ongoing escalation of long-range strikes and drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine in the conflict that began with Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
In Dnipro, at least five people were killed and dozens injured after residential areas were struck, Reuters reported. Emergency crews continued search and rescue operations amid concerns that more people could be trapped under debris.
In Kyiv, at least four people were killed and 51 injured in separate strikes. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that two high-rise residential buildings were hit. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, said on Telegram that preliminary reports suggested people may still be trapped under rubble, as rescue teams worked through damaged structures.
Further south-east in Zaporizhzhia, an industrial facility was also struck. No casualties have been confirmed so far, although assessments of the damage are still ongoing.
Separately, in Russia’s Kursk region, a Ukrainian drone strike killed one civilian, according to AFP. Regional governor Alexander Khinshtein said an unmanned aerial vehicle hit a civilian vehicle in the village of Shchekino in the Rylsky district, adding: “To our immense grief, a civilian has been killed.”
The latest exchanges come against the backdrop of a prolonged war that has caused widespread destruction, heavy military and civilian casualties, and large-scale displacement. Despite repeated diplomatic efforts, negotiations remain stalled, with no clear progress towards a ceasefire as hostilities continue across multiple fronts.
