Hundreds of Kashmiri students studying in Delhi on Friday held a protest against the hanging of Afzal Guru in Tihar Jail. The protests march coincided with the Eidgah Chalo call given by the Hurriyat Conference (G) in Jammu and Kashmir.

Carrying banners and placards that read: We Want Freedom, Quit Kashmir, Resistance for Existence and so on, the protestors assembled at Eidgah, Batla House, after Friday prayers.

“Guru’s judicial murder is an off-shoot of the numerous brutalities of India perpetrated by its state in Kashmir,” said a student, who wished not to be identified. “By using such an inhumane policy, Indian state can kill us but they cannot break our resolve for freedom.”

The protestors were led by SAR Geelani – one among the accused in the same Parliament attack – who was later acquitted by the Supreme Court of India, after remaining in jail for five years.

“By hanging Afzal Guru, the Indian state has declared war on the people of Kashmir. The peace-loving people across the world were shocked by his hanging,” Geelani said.

Although India has been killing innocents in Kashmir, Geelani said, Kashmiris will not kill any innocent in revenge in their struggle.

“Guru was an innocent. He was hanged without being given a fair trial,” he said. “His sacrifice has rejuvenated the freedom struggle in Kashmir and has inspired the youth of Kashmir to continue the struggle against Indian occupation.”
