SRINAGAR: Academicians, writers, journalists, social activists and members of civil society on Saturday paid rich tributes to noted physician, writer and social activist Dr Javid Iqbal at a condolence-cum-remembrance meeting organised by the Kashmir Centre for Social and Development Studies (KCSDS) at Amar Singh Club here.
Speakers described Dr Iqbal’s death as a significant loss to Kashmir’s intellectual and social landscape, recalling his contributions as a physician, columnist, public intellectual and advocate of social causes.
The meeting was presided over by Justice (Retd.) Bashir Ahmad Kirmani, who said Dr Iqbal had devoted his life to raising public awareness and addressing social issues. He described him as a committed social activist and scholar whose work was guided by concern for society and the common good.
KCSDS Chairperson Hameedah Nayeem, while welcoming participants, said the organisation had lost its “soul and conscience”. She also presented a memorial citation in recognition of Dr Iqbal’s lifelong contributions, which was received by Bashir Siraj, a close relative of the deceased.
Several speakers highlighted different aspects of Dr Iqbal’s life and work. Religious scholar Showkat Hussain Keng recalled his deep knowledge of Islamic theology, history and Persian literature, while physician Altaf Hussain spoke about the breadth of his accomplishments.
Senior advocate Zaffar Ahmad Shah remembered Dr Iqbal’s efforts in helping people affected by natural calamities. Ajaz Ahmad Kakroo highlighted his role in promoting Urdu literature, while writer Nasir Naseer recalled his association with literary circles in Kashmir.
Journalists Mahmood-ur-Rashid and Gowhar Geelani shared personal memories of the late scholar, while political scientist Noor Ahmad Baba and scholar Maroof Shah reflected on their long association with him.
Friends and associates, including Dr Abdul Waheed, Dr Abdul Ahad, Dr Nazir Mushtaq and Advocate Ghulam Nabi Shaheen, narrated anecdotes highlighting Dr Iqbal’s simplicity, generosity and commitment to helping others.
Poet Zareef Ahmad Zareef recited a Kashmiri elegy composed in memory of Dr Iqbal, while poet Amir Suhail Wani also paid tribute through verse.
The gathering was attended by a large number of prominent citizens, including academics, former bureaucrats, technocrats, journalists, medical professionals, business leaders and social activists. Members of Dr Iqbal’s family were also present.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Abdul Majid Zargar. The proceedings were conducted by Syed Shakeel Qalander.
