SRINAGAR: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) will lead India’s first Department of Science and Technology (DST)-funded Centre of Excellence for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research under the One Health framework, the university said on Thursday.
The Centre of Excellence, titled Exploring Challenges to Identify Antimicrobial Resistance Drivers and Potential Antimicrobial Alternatives in a One Health Approach (CoE-AMRDPAA), has been sanctioned by the Union government’s Department of Science and Technology.
According to the university, the centre will focus on studying the drivers of antimicrobial resistance and exploring potential alternatives to antimicrobial drugs by adopting a One Health approach, which integrates human, animal and environmental health.
SKUAST-K will serve as the lead institution in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Chandigarh, and the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar.
The collaboration will bring together expertise in microbiology, genomics and biotechnology to strengthen research on antimicrobial resistance, a growing global public health concern.
University officials said the initiative is expected to support interdisciplinary research and develop scientific solutions to address antimicrobial resistance in India.
