SRINAGAR: Police in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district have attached immovable properties worth approximately Rs 1.5 crore belonging to an alleged drug peddler as part of a crackdown on narcotics trafficking, officials said on Friday.
The attached assets include six shops, five godowns, a tin shed and a plinth located in Manigam village, falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station Qazigund. The properties belong to Mohd Ashraf Khanday, son of Gh. Ahmad Khanday, a resident of Nipora in Kulgam.
Police said the action was taken under Section 68-F of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act following completion of due legal procedures. The properties were identified as proceeds of crime generated through illegal drug trafficking and were found to be directly linked to narcotics-related activities. The accused is also involved in FIR No. 196/2024 registered under Sections 8/15 of the NDPS Act at the concerned police station.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kulgam, Anayat Ali Choudhary, said the move is part of sustained efforts to dismantle the financial networks supporting drug trafficking. He reiterated that police have adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards narcotics-related offences.
The SSP warned that individuals involved in drug peddling, financing or providing support to narcotics networks will face strict legal action, including property attachment, financial investigations and prosecution under stringent legal provisions. He emphasised that illegally acquired assets linked to drug trafficking would be identified and seized.
Police also appealed to the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by sharing information to help curb the drug menace and safeguard society, particularly the youth, from its harmful effects.
