Chief Minister Omar Abdullah led the tributes on Monday, posting on social media: “This #AmbedkarJayanti, we honour the torchbearer of equality and justice. May his legacy continue to guide our path forward.” In an official message, he lauded Dr Ambedkar’s tireless efforts for the upliftment of the underprivileged and said, “Dr Ambedkar believed an ideal society can only be built on the foundation of social justice, and his monumental contributions to humanity shall always be remembered with reverence.”

Calling on the youth to draw inspiration from Ambedkar’s ideals, Omar Abdullah underscored the continuing relevance of his vision in today’s times. “Dr Ambedkar’s role in drafting the Constitution, abolishing untouchability, and shaping India’s socio-economic and educational policies leaves a legacy that must guide us in building an inclusive and equal society,” he said.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also extended greetings to the people on the occasion, describing Dr Ambedkar as a “champion of the downtrodden” who fought relentlessly against social and economic inequality. “His visionary ideals, rooted in the relentless pursuit of social justice, continue to serve as a beacon of hope and an unwavering source of inspiration,” the Lieutenant Governor said. He urged citizens to rededicate themselves to Ambedkar’s values and work together to build a united, just and humane society.

In Rajouri district, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary marked the day by attending commemorative functions at villages Dabber and Naniyal in the Nowshera area. Addressing gatherings there, Choudhary paid homage to Ambedkar as “one of India’s foremost politicians, jurists and social reformers.” He said, “Dr Ambedkar dedicated his life to the fight against social discrimination and tirelessly worked for equal rights for women, labourers and marginalised communities.” He added that the current government remains committed to building a Jammu and Kashmir envisioned by Dr Ambedkar — one founded on equality, inclusion, and social justice for all citizens regardless of caste, creed or community.

As a mark of respect and environmental commitment, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), in collaboration with Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL), organised a large-scale plantation drive on the left bank of the Tawi Riverfront. The initiative, aimed at honouring Ambedkar’s legacy through sustainable action, witnessed enthusiastic participation from civic officials, local volunteers and residents.

Dr Devansh Yadav, Commissioner of JMC and CEO of JSCL, led the drive and described it as “a humble tribute to the visionary who championed the values of equality and progress.” Speaking to the press, he emphasised the importance of greening urban spaces to build a more inclusive and environmentally conscious future.

In addition to the plantation effort, the Commissioner reflected on the grand Tawi Aarti held a day earlier, which attracted over 5,000 participants. He announced that the Aarti would now be held regularly, especially during the Amarnath Yatra season. “This spiritual tradition will not only enrich the cultural life of the region but also become a source of economic upliftment for local vendors, artisans, and small businesses along the riverbank,” Dr Yadav said.

He added that plans are underway to improve infrastructure along the Tawi to accommodate growing footfall and to ensure the Aarti evolves into a landmark event in Jammu’s calendar.

Senior officials, including Joint Commissioner Krishan Lal, Deputy Commissioner (South) Lal Chand, Health Officer Dr Vinod Sharma, and members of the Forest Department also took part in the plantation drive, further underlining the government’s commitment to community-driven development and ecological responsibility.
