Encounters broke out at two places across Kashmir. While the one in south Kashmir witnessed killing of a militant, the other encounter in north Kashmir is going on, police sources said.
On specific information, well placed sources said, the Bewora village near Sri Gufwara in Bejbehara’s Dachinpora belt was cordoned off. Police had information about the presence of three militants in the village. Within an hour after the siege, the contact was established.
Top police sources said they have killed one militant in the encounter. He has been identified as Basit Rasool Dar. Son of a bank manager living in Marhama, Dar, a was a student of B Tech in the Islamic University. Considered to be a close confidant of Zakir, who succeeded Burhan Wani, he was missing from his home for last two months. He was operating under the alias of Sameer. A report said Rasool’s body has been removed to Bejbehara and is in the process of being handed over to the family. Massive deployments have been made in the entire belt, reports said.
Police said the siege is still in place but they are unsure of Dar’s accomplices. Nobody knows if they are still in the cordon or have given a slip to the police.
SP Islamabad Zubair Khan told Kashmir Life that Basit had joined militancy in the current unrest. The militant was killed in open, said SHO Sirgufwara.
In the village, reports said, the police and army are making announcements from mosques asking people to come out for an identification parade.
The search operation is still going on in the area.
Another encounter is in progress in Bumai village in Sopore. Top police sources said a Pakistani militant is in the siege and the fire fighting is going in. He is believed to be a Pakistani national who operates under the alias of abu Bakar. Right now fierce clash is going on.
Authorities have snapped telephone link to the region and right now only BSNL is operating. They said the telecommunication was snapped to prevent civilians from getting information about the encounter till it is over. Civilians have been getting into the cordon areas and it created an ugly situation in south Kashmir recently, one official said.
