SRINAGAR: The Vice-President of India, CP Radhakrishnan, on Friday released the Constitution of India in the Sindhi language in both Devanagari and Persian scripts at an event held at Uparashtrapati Bhawan.

The release coincided with Sindhi Bhasha Diwas, where the Vice-President extended greetings to the Sindhi-speaking community and described Sindhi as one of the oldest and most melodious languages, with a literary tradition reflecting a blend of Vedantic philosophy and Sufi thought.
He said the availability of the Constitution in Sindhi, including its first-ever publication in Devanagari script since Independence, marks a significant step toward linguistic inclusivity. He added that the Constitution is not merely a legal document but the living framework of the nation, guiding governance and safeguarding citizens’ rights.
The Vice-President lauded the Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making the Constitution accessible in multiple Indian languages, stating that such initiatives strengthen democratic participation by enabling citizens to understand it in their mother tongue.
He noted that India is among the few countries that have translated its Constitution into multiple regional languages, citing earlier versions in Bodo, Dogri, Santhali, Tamil, Gujarati, and Nepali as examples of linguistic inclusivity and cultural preservation.
Highlighting the historical journey of the Sindhi community, he recalled its resilience after Partition and its inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution through the 21st Constitutional Amendment in 1967.
Emphasising linguistic equality, he said that while mother tongues hold special significance, all languages must be respected equally as carriers of culture and identity. He added that India’s diversity remains its greatest strength.
The Vice-President also appreciated the Ministry of Law and Justice and Regional Language Officers for their role in expanding access to constitutional texts. He expressed confidence that such initiatives would support the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
He called upon citizens to celebrate both their mother tongues and India’s collective linguistic heritage under the guiding principle of “Nation First – Rashtra Pratham.”
Union Minister of State for Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal, Rajasthan Legislative Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani, Member of Parliament Shankar Lalwani, and Secretary, Legislative Department Rajiv Mani were among those present at the event.
