Srinagar: Kashmir weatherman Sonam Lotus said the inclement weather will continue for next 24-36 hours but it is not going to be anything abnormal that should scare the people. The entire North region is having rains and these would continue in Jammu and Kashmir too.

Media have reported thunderstorms accompanied by squall, hail and heavy rains in at least 13 Indian states and two Union Territories on May 7. It excludes Jammu and Kashmir. The forecast has triggered sort of a panic in these states.

“This is nothing abnormal,” Lotus said. “We had earlier predicated rains and now we forecast these intermittent rains to continue for next 24 to 36 hours.”

Lotus said the intermittent rains will continue and there will be storms as well. “But that is what is happenings in this season and it is normal,” Lotus said. “There is also a possibility of brief three to five-minute speedy winds which has also been happening throughout history in this season.” He said thunderstorms in April-May are normal. “But there is nothing that is exceptionally different which should trigger a scare,” he added.

The weatherman said the people in these days should take precautions, especially if they are travelling to mountainous areas like Zoji La. “These areas are vulnerable to landslides in this season,” he said.

The entire region is witnessing low temperature. Kashmir has recorded 12.9 mm of rains in last 24 hours. Weatherman’s office said Kashmir recorded a total of 109.2 mm of rains in April which is way behind the average and much lower in comparison to 2017.
