SRINAGAR: The Cabinet Committee on Security is scheduled to meet at 7 pm on Wednesday in New Delhi to assess the evolving situation arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia and its potential implications for India.
Tensions in the region escalated following a joint military strike by the United States and Israel on February 28 targeting Iranian territory, which reportedly led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with other senior officials. The development triggered a strong retaliatory response from Tehran, intensifying the conflict.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a CCS meeting to review the situation and evaluate ongoing and proposed mitigation measures. During the briefing, the Cabinet Secretary presented a comprehensive overview of the global scenario and steps undertaken by various ministries and departments.
The discussions covered the anticipated impact across key sectors including agriculture, fertilisers, food security, petroleum, power, MSMEs, exports, shipping, trade, finance, and supply chains. The overall macroeconomic outlook and further response strategies were also examined.
Officials assessed the short-, medium-, and long-term implications of the conflict on the global economy and its potential effects on India, while deliberating on both immediate and long-term countermeasures.
The meeting also reviewed the availability of essential commodities for citizens, including food, fuel, and energy, and outlined strategies to ensure uninterrupted supply. The impact on farmers, particularly regarding fertiliser availability for the upcoming Kharif season, was discussed, with the government expressing confidence in existing stock levels and exploring alternative sourcing options.
