Indian constitution says that you cannot play with life and liberty of an individual and liberty includes right to move out, right to work, right to attend his profession and right to do any work that is assigned to him. The undeclared curfews violate these rights.

Regarding right to freedom of expression Qayoom says “Under article 19 everybody has right to take a procession, right to demonstrate, right to speech, right to expression as long as it is peaceful.”

“But here the police don’t even ascertain whether the demonstration is peaceful or not, they pre-empt them with tear gas shelling, baton charge and firing.”

He said that the people resorting to violence is actually a retaliatory measure from those whose voice is choked. “When they don’t allow people to express their own feelings, the end result can only be imagined,” he said.

Consequences

The government is plugging all the channels of expression of speech. The resulting atmosphere is becoming charged and as there is no channel to release the pressure

Professor Noor Baba said that restrictions and curbs on a society have a deep impact on the society. “For any society or a human being to grow, it needs a free atmosphere and when there are curbs and restrictions, abnormality creeps in,” says Baba. “It has number of consequences. It will mar the growth of every institution right from democracy to justice delivery.”

According to psychologists the pressure built in the society will either be absorbed in the society and increase the social degeneration or it will explode with violent traits that will always be dreadful than previous violent actions. The level of desperation, frustration and hopelessness will increase manifold.

“The increase in the cases of psychological trauma and other related disorders are the consequences of this denial of freedom of expression” says Baba.
