SRINAGAR: Indian Railways has announced plans to renew more than 7,900 kilometres of railway track over the next two years as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure and improve operational safety.

The Railway Ministry said on Sunday that over 7,500 kilometres of track renewal work is currently underway during the financial year 2025–26. In the previous financial year, the national transporter completed the renewal of more than 6,800 kilometres of track.
Officials said the large-scale renewal programme is aimed at improving ride quality, increasing operational efficiency and enhancing safety standards across the network.
The Ministry further noted that the length of high-speed-capable tracks has nearly doubled over the past decade, rising from about 31,000 kilometres in 2014 to more than 84,000 kilometres at present. This expansion has enabled train operations at speeds of 110 kilometres per hour and above across nearly 80 per cent of the national rail network.
According to the Ministry, sustained investment and focused execution over the last 11 years have significantly strengthened railway track infrastructure, contributing to improved safety, reliability and capacity of rail operations across the country.
