SRINAGAR: Secretary Transport, Avny Lavasa, conducted a surprise inspection of the MVD Tax Collection Post at Lakhanpur on Saturday, directing all tax collections to be processed through POS machines and ordering the end of manual cash transactions.
Lavasa instructed RTO Kathua to bar vehicles from outside the Union Territory without valid documents and reviewed non-functional weighing bridges under the State Taxes Department. She called for preparation of estimates and a DPR to repair and upgrade at least two weighbridges, highlighting their importance in curbing overloaded goods vehicles.
RTO Kathua, Surinder Paul Sharma, stressed the need for real-time data from the National Highways Authority of India on overloaded vehicles to prevent revenue loss, a matter Lavasa assured would be taken up with NHAI.
Addressing the media, the Secretary said regular checking drives across the UT would be intensified to reduce traffic violations. She warned of strict enforcement, including suspension of driving licences, route permits, and registration certificates for habitual offenders, and confirmed plans to upgrade MVD Kathua’s infrastructure to meet departmental standards.
