SRINAGAR: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated more than two crore Aadhaar numbers belonging to deceased individuals as part of a nationwide effort to improve the accuracy and reliability of the Aadhaar database.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said the data was obtained from the Registrar General of India as well as state and Union Territory authorities, adding that Aadhaar numbers are never re-assigned to other individuals.
According to the Ministry, deactivating the Aadhaar of a deceased person is essential to prevent identity fraud or the unauthorised use of such credentials to access welfare benefits. UIDAI has also urged citizens to report the deaths of family members on the myAadhaar Portal once the official death certificate is issued by the relevant authority.
Earlier this year, UIDAI launched a ‘Reporting of Death of a Family Member’ service on the myAadhaar Portal, currently operational in 25 states and Union Territories integrated with the Civil Registration System.
